The Ama Yangri Trek is a short Himalayan adventure from Kathmandu into the beautiful Helambu Valley of Sindhupalchok. The journey combines scenic mountain roads, traditional Hyolmo villages, Buddhist monasteries, rhododendron and pine forests, and an ascent to Ama Yangri Peak at approximately 3,771 m.
From the summit, weather permitting, you can enjoy wide Himalayan views toward Langtang, Jugal Himal, Ganesh Himal and Gaurishankar.
*(Road times and distances can vary because the final mountain-road section can be rough and conditions change seasonally. Current sources put Kathmandu–Tarkeghyang at roughly 80–90 km and around 5–6 hours by road).

After breakfast, your guide and private vehicle will pick you up from your hotel in Kathmandu. Begin the scenic drive toward Helambu, leaving the busy Kathmandu Valley behind and heading into the green hills of Sindhupalchok. The route passes through Melamchi and follows the mountain roads toward the upper Helambu region. Along the way, you will see terraced farmland, river valleys, forests, traditional villages and mountain landscapes. The final section toward Tarkeghyang is a winding mountain road and can be rough in places, so the journey may take longer depending on road conditions. Arrive at Tarkeghyang, a beautiful traditional Hyolmo/Sherpa settlement at around 2,600 m. The village is known for its Buddhist cultural heritage and monastery. After checking into your lodge, enjoy a relaxing walk around the village. You can explore the traditional houses, prayer flags, chortens and local surroundings.
After breakfast, begin your trek from Tarkeghyang toward Ama Yangri Base Camp, locally associated with the high grazing area around Chyomuthang. The trail gradually climbs through beautiful rhododendron, oak and fir forests. Depending on the season, the forest may be particularly colorful with blooming rhododendrons. As you climb higher, the trees begin to thin and the trail opens onto alpine grazing areas. After approximately 3–4 hours of walking, reach the Ama Yangri Base Camp area at around 3,200 m. Sources describe Chyomuthang/Ama Yangri Base Camp as a scenic highland area with views toward the surrounding Himalayan ranges. After lunch, relax and enjoy the mountain surroundings. An overnight stay at the base-camp area also makes the following morning's summit climb more manageable than attempting the entire ascent from lower elevation in one day.
Today is the main highlight of the Ama Yangri Trek. Wake early, ideally before sunrise, and begin the ascent toward Ama Yangri Peak. The trail climbs steeply through forest before reaching more open alpine terrain. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic and the views expand. Continue toward the summit, where prayer flags and religious symbols mark this spiritually important mountain. At approximately 3,771 m, reach Ama Yangri Peak, one of the highest accessible viewpoints in the Kathmandu-area trekking region. On a clear morning, enjoy panoramic views toward the Langtang, Jugal Himal, Ganesh Himal and Gaurishankar ranges. Spend some time at the summit for photography and sightseeing before beginning the descent. Return to Ama Yangri Base Camp and continue downhill through the forest toward Tarkeghyang. The descent is considerably easier in terms of altitude but can be demanding on the knees because of the steep sections. Arrive in Tarkeghyang in the afternoon or evening and enjoy a well-earned dinner. Overnight: Teahouse/lodge in Tarkeghyang (Altitude note: The summit day involves a significant elevation gain from Tarkeghyang/base camp. Walk at a comfortable pace, take regular breaks, stay hydrated and follow your guide's advice)
After breakfast, begin the return journey from Tarkeghyang toward Kathmandu. Drive back through the Helambu countryside, passing mountain villages, terraced fields, forests and the Melamchi area. Enjoy the final views of the Helambu landscape before returning to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel or another convenient location, marking the completion of your Ama Yangri Trek. End of Trek.
