Bhairav Kunda Trek is a short and rewarding Himalayan trek in the Sindhupalchok district of Nepal, close to the Tibetan border. The trek combines scenic mountain driving with peaceful trails through forests, alpine meadows, yak pastures, and traditional villages.
The main attraction is Bhairav Kunda, a sacred high-altitude lake situated at approximately 4,240 meters. From the surrounding ridges, trekkers can enjoy magnificent Himalayan views, including peaks in the Langtang, Jugal Himal and Rolwaling ranges, subject to weather conditions.
📍 Route: Kathmandu ➔ Bagam ➔ Bhairav Kunda ➔ Bagam ➔ Kathmandu
Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, a representative from Himanshu Tours and Travels will be waiting outside the airport terminal according to your flight schedule. You will be welcomed and transferred to your hotel by private vehicle. After checking in, you will have time to rest and refresh. Your trekking guide will provide a short briefing about the Bhairav Kunda Trek, including the route, accommodation, transportation, weather conditions, packing requirements, safety precautions, and altitude considerations. If your arrival time permits, you may explore the nearby streets of Kathmandu or simply relax at the hotel before beginning your trek.
After breakfast, begin your scenic drive from Kathmandu toward Sindhupalchok. The journey initially follows the Araniko Highway, one of Nepal's historic highways connecting Kathmandu with the northern border region. The road passes through the Kathmandu Valley before following the Bhote Koshi and surrounding mountain landscapes. Along the way, you will see terraced hillsides, traditional villages, rivers, waterfalls, forests, and distant snow-covered Himalayan peaks. As you travel deeper into Sindhupalchok, the road becomes more mountainous and may include rough sections. A private 4WD vehicle is recommended for comfort and road conditions. After approximately 6–8 hours, depending on road conditions and stops, arrive in the Chagam/Bagam area. Check into a local lodge and relax after the long drive.
After breakfast, continue the journey by 4WD toward Chokar Mokar. Today's road section is more remote and rugged. The journey takes you through mountain villages, forested slopes, and increasingly dramatic Himalayan landscapes. Depending on road and weather conditions, the driving time can vary considerably. Your guide and driver will select the safest available route. After reaching Chokar Mokar, settle into your local accommodation and take some time to rest. Later in the afternoon, undertake a short acclimatization hike around the village and surrounding ridges. This gentle walk helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude while allowing you to enjoy the mountain scenery.
Today is the main trekking day and one of the highlights of your journey. After an early breakfast, begin walking toward Bhairav Kunda. The trail gradually climbs through beautiful mountain forests and alpine landscapes. You will pass through areas of rhododendron, pine and other alpine vegetation, depending on the season and altitude. As you gain elevation, the forest becomes thinner and the landscape opens into alpine meadows and traditional yak grazing pastures. The trail eventually reaches the sacred Bhairav Kunda, a high-altitude lake situated at approximately 4,240 meters. Bhairav Kunda is an important pilgrimage site for both Hindu and Buddhist communities. A small temple/shrine near the lake adds to the spiritual character of this beautiful mountain destination. On clear days, the surrounding ridges offer impressive views toward the Langtang, Jugal Himal and Rolwaling mountain ranges. After exploring the area, settle into your basic teahouse or campsite.
Wake up early in the morning for one of the most memorable experiences of the trek: sunrise from the Bhairav Kunda area. Weather permitting, the first rays of sunlight illuminate the surrounding Himalayan peaks and mountain ridges. Spend some time enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and taking photographs. After breakfast, begin your descent toward Bagam Village. The return trail takes you through alpine meadows, forests and mountain ridges. Since most of today's route is downhill, take care on steep or rocky sections. After approximately 4–6 hours of trekking, arrive at Bagam and check into a local lodge. Enjoy a warm meal and relax after the trek.
After breakfast, begin the scenic drive back to Kathmandu. Retrace the mountain roads through the Sindhupalchok countryside before reconnecting with the Araniko Highway. Enjoy the changing landscape as you descend from the high mountains toward the Kathmandu Valley. The journey passes through traditional villages, terraced farmland, forested hills, and river valleys. After approximately 6–8 hours, arrive in Kathmandu. Check into your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening. This is a good opportunity to rest, explore nearby areas, purchase souvenirs, or enjoy a farewell dinner.
Today marks the end of your 7-Day Bhairav Kunda Trek in Nepal. Depending on your flight schedule, you can enjoy breakfast at the hotel and have some free time before departure. Our representative from Himanshu Tours and Travels will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport approximately 3 hours before your scheduled international flight. You will be dropped at the airport for your onward journey, taking home memorable experiences of the sacred Bhairav Kunda, Himalayan landscapes, mountain villages, and beautiful trekking trails of Sindhupalchok. End of the Bhairav Kunda Trek.
