Makalu Base Camp Trek

A representative meets you at the airport and transfers you to your hotel, with a trip briefing ahead of the flight to Tumlingtar.

A short flight east to Tumlingtar in Nepal's mid-eastern lowlands, the starting point for the trek into the Makalu Barun region.

The trail climbs gradually through lush rhododendron forest and Gurung villages along the river valley.

Further ascent through forest and terraced farmland, following the Barun River toward the national park boundary.

The trail enters Makalu Barun National Park, home to snow leopard, red panda and over 400 recorded bird species, with the terrain steadily gaining altitude.

A steady climb through changing forest cover as the valley narrows toward the high Barun basin.

A rest day to adjust to altitude before continuing higher toward Makalu Base Camp.

The valley opens into high-altitude terrain with the first close views of the Himalayan peaks surrounding Makalu.

A final approach through increasingly barren, rocky terrain toward the base of Mount Makalu.

Arrival at Base Camp, with the Barun Glacier at your feet and a panorama that takes in Makalu's south face (8,481m) alongside Everest and Lhotse.

A day to explore the lakes and glaciers around Base Camp before beginning the descent.

Retracing the route down through the Barun basin, with the terrain softening back into forest.

The return route crosses the Tutu La (4,125m), now widely known as Shipton's Pass after the mountaineer who mapped much of the Everest region's early routes.

A final descent to Tumlingtar followed by the return flight to Kathmandu.

Transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport roughly three hours before your onward flight.
