A short trek to Gosaikunda (4,380m), a sacred alpine lake north of Kathmandu revered by both Hindus and Buddhists — Hindus believe Lord Shiva struck the ground here with his trident to create it, drawing huge crowds of pilgrims during the Janai Purnima festival. The route climbs through rhododendron, pine and bamboo forest via Dhunche and Shin Gompa, home to red pandas, Himalayan black bears and the national bird, the Impeyan pheasant.
