Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poonhill is probably the wonderful trekking in the Annapurna Sanctuary. The highlight of the trek is the beautiful sunrise and Mountain View from the top of Poon Hill. Poon Hill is located at a short hike from Ghorepani.
The trekking region is mainly inhabited by the Gurung people. The Gurung are renowned fighters in the battlefield but they are very warm and welcoming at their homes. We will enjoy their hospitality and unique culture.
We will walk past the thundering Modi River in the early part of the trek. There are many waterfalls, rivers and streams on our way. Most of the region is populated by thick rhododendron forests. The whole forest turns red during spring, when the rhododendrons are in full bloom.
The highlight of the ABC trek is the view of the mountains. You will get a wonderful view of the Machhapuchhre, Annapurna, Gangapurna, Dhaulagiri and Himchuli mountains. Poon Hill and Ghorepani are one of the best places in the Annapurna region for Mountain View.
Poon Hill and Ghorepani trek is a popular short trek choice. We will then head for Annapurna Base Camp, where some of the tallest mountains in the world are within touching distance.
📍 Route: Kathmandu ➔ Pokhara ➔ Ghorepani (PoonHIll) ➔ Annapurna Base Camp ➔ Pokhara ➔ Kathmandu
A representative from Himanshu Tours and trek will be waiting outside the Tribhuwan International airport (TIA) according to your flight schedule to transfer you to the hotel. A short briefing will be done about the trip once you have checked in. Overnight in Kathmandu.
After breakfast at the Hotel we begin our drive towards Nepal’s lake city, Pokhara. The drive will take about 6-7 hours where we follow meandering road over the valley. We then drive along the Trishuli River followed by another river, Marshyangdi River after we cross the half way. Crossing many local settlements we reach Pokhara normally in the afternoon. The rest of the day is at leisure after you have checked in. Overnight stay at Hotel in Pokhara
After breakfast in hotel we drive to Naya Pul and start the trek. We pass through sub-tropical valley forests, sometimes on the carved trail on the side of the cliff. After lunch, we cross the Bhurungdi Khola (river) via a bridge to the village of Tikhedhunga. The Ulleri Hill with thousands of steps and boulders that continually go upward will really prove a test of our stamina. We reach Ulleri by late afternoon. Overnight in Ulleri (Teahouse/lodge).
After breakfast, we ascend to the Ghorepani village. The name Ghorepani in Nepali means ‘horse-water’ due to it being an important campsite for traders before it became a trekker's stop. Ghorepani is an interesting place with small shops and stalls for selling local products and crafts. The town has two parts: one in a saddle and the other a few hundred feet lower. We stop at the higher part of the Ghorepani village that offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains including Annapurna South and Nilgiri mountains. Since Ghorepani lies quite higher than our previous stop, we begin to feel the chilly weather especially in the evenings. Overnight in Ghorepani (Teahouse/lodge).
To catch the sunrise over the Himalayas, we make an early morning climb along the steep trail to the viewpoint of Poon Hill (3,210m/10,529ft), the most popular trekking destination of the Annapurna region. It is also a great viewpoint to enjoy the amazing views of Mustang, Pokhara and more than 20 of the highest mountains including the close-up views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The snowy peaks of the high mountains loom above and around us glowing in the morning light. After breakfast in guest house we start our trek to Chomrong. From Ghorepani to Chomrong is a scenic 15-kilometer mountain trail that takes 7 to 8 hours to complete. You will arrive the large, culturally rich Gurung village of Chhomrong, which sits at the base of Hiunchuli and provides incredible close-up perspectives of Annapurna South, Hiuchuli & Machhapuchhre (Fish Tail). Stay overnight at Chomrong.
We will have an early breakfast and begin our journey to Dovan (2600 m). We will first take a downhill path to Chhomrong Khola (stream) - originating from Hiunchuli glaciers. From Chhomrong Khola, the path is uphill and difficult until we reach Sinuwa. The trail from Sinuwa is flat and easy for most part until we reach Bamboo (2,340 m), where we will have Lunch. From Bamboo, the trail begins to go uphill. There are no huge settlements after Chhomrong and all villages are thinly populated. We finally reach Dovan (2600m), where we rest for the night. Overnight in Dovan.
Today we will trek from Dovan (2,600m) through Deurali (3,230m) to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700m) covers about 13 km of dramatic alpine landscape. Key highlights include passing the historic Hinku Cave, exiting the tree line into the wide glacial Modi Khola valley, and witnessing close-up views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South
We will wake up early for the beautiful sunrise over Fishtail (6990 m) and Annapurna South (7220 m). After breakfast in guest house we will continue our trek to Annapurna Base Camp, which will be intense despite the short duration and moderate steepness. The difficulty is mainly due to thin air pressure as we move higher. Annapurna Base camp is a paradise, offering 360 degree view of the mountains in the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range to the trekkers. Overnight in Annapurna base camp.
We will wake up before the sun rises and enjoy the beautiful sight of sunrise over the mountains. The view will be breathtaking during the first hour of the morning. The view of sun ascending over Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Annapurna I, and Fishtail etc. is beautiful. We will return to our lodge, have breakfast and continue our trek towards Bamboo, where we will stay overnight. Overnight in Bamboo.
We will trek back to Jhinu Danda (meaning hill) - through Sinuwa and Chhomrong village. This is the same path we took on our way up. We will first reach a place called Khuldi Ghar. We will then go down to Chomrong River. Jhinu hill is at an hour of hike from Chomrong.. Today is our last day of trekking in the Annapurna sanctuary. The trail from Jhinu to Matque village is flat and easy for most part. We will cross the suspension bridge and arrive the point where our Jeep is waiting for us. It will drive us back to Pokhara (823 m), it takes about 2-3 hours to reach pokhara city. Overnight in Pokhara. (*Option: Jhinu Danda is famous for its natural hot water springs. We will enjoy bathing at the hot springs. Two rivers, Modi Khola and Kyumun Khola, meet at Jhinu)
We will return back to Kathmandu today. The journey is along the same route - Prithivi Highway - that we took on our way to Pokhara from Kathmandu Overnight in Kathmandu
